MY THOUGHTS ON NEW MTV SERIES “WASHINGTON HEIGHTS”
I have known this show was coming for some time now, and after reading the plot, I was kind of concerned about how it would kick my little web series’ ass. This feeling came from the summary of the “Washington Heights” series talking about how the cast is ”going after their dreams”. I am not going to get into why I felt betrayed. That’s a story for another time. Now, fears are gone, I have a new perspective, and I am no longer concerned about this series being big competition. ”Washington Heights” comes from the big monster, Viacom. I know this show has major backing behind it, backing that I could only dream of having for “In the Circle”. My show is done all by me, Joseph Matthew Garrett. I shoot, I cast, I edit, I do it all. So, of course more people are going to watch this “Washington Heights” show. Their commercials run all day long on national TV, they have major presence on one of the most visited sites on the web, MTV.com, and they will get coverage on every single major entertainment blogs and TV talk shows… So, I get it.
The series, “Washington Heights” follows 9 Dominican 2o-somethings from the Washington Heights area of New York, and follows them as they pursue their dreams, as well as their interactions with each other…………… Sounds familiar?
Surprisingly, I am really excited to see the show. Anytime MTV want’s to bring diversity to their channel, I have to commend it. I love that urban, youthful style that is very similar to “In the Circle”, which came out in 2011. I haven’t seen a show like “Washington Heights” on MTV, since “Making the Band” (please bring that back!!!). So, with “Jersey Shore” being out the way, I hope this show will have the same impact. Sadly, people have been on twitter talking about how MTV is trying to make Dominicans look bad with “Washington Heights”, but I always think those comments are foolishness, because there is no perfect person. So, if there is anything flawed you see from these cast members, it’s no greater than the flaws we all have. Not any one person is a representation of a whole race or culture of people. Stop hating because they didn’t choose you for the show.
The show looks to be well put together, there looks to be an interesting group of people, and it has a little grit to it. So, I am not mad at this show and I will be watching when the show premieres on January 9th 10/9c . However, you all need to be watching “IN THE CIRCLE: THE DREAMS OF NEWARK” every other Saturday. New episode coming January 12. Check out all episodes in our EPISODES section of this site.
